Per the Nevada Public Records Law, Las Vegas public records include the general books and operating records of any government agency, whose contents are not legally exempt from public viewership. Las Vegas public records may be in the form of hand or typewritten documents. They may also include images and photographs, videos, and audio documents. While most government records are public, some may be legally exempt from public view if:
- The information could compromise public safety.
- The information identifies individuals living with addiction.
- The information would jeopardize the record holder’s employment opportunities.

- The information relates to an ongoing police investigation.

Las Vegas Crime Statistics
The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department publishes crime and arrest data regularly and makes the publications available online. In 2018, the LVMPG reported 10,071 violent crimes and 47,896 property crimes throughout the year. There were 5,134 cases of aggravated assault in Las Vegas, 3,436 robberies, 1,296 cases of rape, and 205 murders. Property crimes outnumbered violent crimes, with 26,608 reported cases of larceny theft in 2018 alone. These numbers represent a rise in crimes and arrests from the previous year. In 2017, there were 9,949 violent crimes and 46,673 property crimes.
Are Las Vegas Criminal Records Public?
Not all Las Vegas criminal records are open to the public. For instance, criminal background checks are only available to the record owner, who can obtain one by visiting the Police Records Bureau of a local LVMPD. Requesters must bring along any of the following forms of identification:
- Any state Driver’s License
- Military Identification
- Passport - with a valid date and visa stamp
- Resident Alien Card issued by INS or a Matricula card
How to Obtain Police Reports and Arrest Records
To obtain a Las Vegas police report, requesters must complete the Citizen Request for Report/Background Check form and ensure it contains the following:
- Email address
- Phone number with area code
- Event number or date/time and location of the incident
- Signed and notarized authorization
- Copy of valid government-issued photo ID
Requests will be returned by U.S. mail or personal pick up. Requesters must also bring along a valid government-issued ID to prove ownership of the record. If requesting for a dependent or friend, the requester must bring a copy of a birth certificate or a completed authorization form in order to receive the record. To visit an inmate at the Las Vegas Detention Center, the potential visitor’s details must be on an official list which the inmate must fill out. Once on the list, visitors may arrive on the appropriate date and time without pre-registration. Visitors are advised to call (702) 229-6444 to confirm that they are on the inmate’s visitation list. All visitors must present a proper photo ID before entering the facility and check in at least thirty minutes before visitation begins.
Staff at the facility may refuse entry to visitors who:
- Wear inappropriate attire
- Appear under the influence of alcohol or other drugs
- Is a convicted felon
- Has served time at the Detention Center in the past six months
- Has outstanding warrants
- Is on probation or parole
- Is disruptive to inmates or other visitors
