What are Lyon County Public Records?

Under the Nevada Public Records Law, Lyon County public records include all other information made, received, or preserved by an agency as part of its operation, organization, or policy. The law broadly describes Lyon public records as books, photographs, maps, digital data, audio records, and video materials. However, some records, including the following, are exempt from public disclosure:

Lyon County Crime Statistics

The Nevada Department of Public Safety (DPS) provides countywide crime statistics through its Records, Communications, and Compliance Division (RCCD). The RCCD publishes annual reports with details of reported index crimes. According to the 2019 report, Lyon County recorded a total of 716 index offenses. These include 23 rape incidents, 7 robberies, 155 aggravated assaults, 102 burglaries, 71 motor vehicle thefts, and 4 arson incidents. The most committed offense was larceny, with 354 reported cases. There was no murder reported in 2019.

Are Lyon County Criminal Records Public?

Lyon County criminal records are not public records. Under Nevada law, only the subject of the record may obtain criminal history record information. Lyon criminal records are available with the Nevada Department of Public Safety. To order, complete a Request for Nevada Criminal History (DPS 006). Obtain a fingerprint card completed with the requestor's ten fingerprints taken simultaneously on a standard fingerprint card (FD-258). The card must carry the following requester details:

  • Full name
  • Date and place of birth
  • Race, sex, height, weight, eye color, and hair color.
  • Signature

The fingerprint must be an original card, processed, dated, and signed by a certified fingerprinting technician. Each record costs $27, payable by certified check or money order made out to the Nevada Department of Public Safety. Send the request to:

How to Obtain Lyon County Police Reports and Arrest Records

The Lyon County Sheriff's Office issues copies of police reports and arrest records to interested persons through its Records Division. Arrest records and criminal reports are only accessible by persons directly involved with the incident. To obtain a Lyon County arrest record, complete the request form with a report number. If the report number is unknown, provide any of the names in the report and incident date. Include the date of birth and the requestor's contact information. How to Find Sex Offender Information in Lyon County

The Lyon County Sheriff's Office maintains an online database of county sex offenders. Members of the public can search for sex offender information using the offender's first or last name. Users may also use the area search to find offenders by address, city, and zip code. The sex offender database displays each offender's full name, aliases, risk level, and status. Other available details include the offender's photograph, physical description, address, and offense information. The platform also allows offender tracking, which sends notifications to registered users when there is a change in the offender's status, address, or other information. Similarly, the Nevada Department of Public Safety maintains a searchable sex offender registry with statewide information on registered persons. Users can find sex offenders by conducting a name, vehicle, or geographical search. The registry also provides the offender's name, physical description, risk level, address, and conviction information.

How Do I Visit an Inmate in the Lyon County Jail?

Interested persons must schedule visits through the Lyon County Jail's third-party vendor at least 24 hours in advance, and up to 7 days before the intended visitation date. All visits are via video. Remote visits may occur every day of the week. However, onsite visits are restricted to Mondays through Thursdays, from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.. Inmates may have one visit per day, with each visit lasting a maximum of 15 minutes. Visitors should be at least 18 years old. Younger persons may only visit if accompanied by a parent or legal guardian. An inmate may receive a maximum of two persons per visit.

Jail staff may accept prescription medications if in the original prescription bottle. The bottle must also carry the inmate's name. Staff will not accept anything else during the visitation. Note that regardless of schedule, the Lyon County Jail may suspend or cancel a visit at any time.

Court Records

The Lyon County court system features District, Justice, and Municipal Courts. The District Court may exercise general jurisdiction over all county cases, including civil and criminal matters. It hears felony and misdemeanor criminal matters and civil cases with amounts more than $10,000. The District Court also hears matters regarding the recovery of real property, wills and estates, domestic relations cases, and appeals from other courts.

The Justice and Municipal Courts are courts of limited jurisdiction. The Justice Court hears cases with claims less than $10,000 and also hears landlord-tenant, fine collection, forfeiture, and tax cases. The Municipal Court hears violations of city and municipal ordinances.

The Office of Vital Records is the state's legal custodian for all birth certificates since July 1, 1911. Older records are available at the Recorder's Office. Lyon county birth records are not public records. The office only entertains requests from the following persons:

Obtain copies of Lyon County death records from the Nevada Office of Vital Records. Records of deaths from July 1, 1911, to the present, are requestable by sending mail requests. These records are not public records. Access is restricted to:

  • The subject of the record
  • Anyone related to the subject by blood or marriage
  • The subject's legal representative or legal guardian

To request a Lyon County marriage certificate, send a death certificate application in English or Spanish.
